IN THE NEWS: MARC FOGEL

Marc Fogel, 60+ years old, was arrested in August of 2021 and sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony in Russia for possession of cannabis. He worked for the US State Dept. and was attached to the US Embassy. He taught English. He also taught History in Columbia, Venezuela, Oman,& Malaysia . He spent the last 10 years teaching in Russia. He is from Pittsburgh. We urge the US State Dept. to include Marc Fogel in its prisoner swap for Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan. We normally only feature cannabis prisoners in the US Federal System but, prohibition of cannabis anywhere is wrong.

President Joe Biden says his administration is “working on” plans to fulfill his campaign pledge to free people who are incarcerated for marijuana. This marks the first time that the president has publicly made a substantive comment about cannabis policy since taking office more than a year ago.

“I don’t think anyone should be in prison for the use of marijuana,” Biden said in response to a question from The New York Post’s Steven Nelson on Saturday night after stepping off Marine One on the White House lawn.

“We’re working on the crime bill now,” the president added
—though it’s not clear what legislation he was referring to.
